Vic Mensa on New Album, His Parents, Chance the Rapper, JAY-Z & More

Plus, how David Bowie and Prince helped inspire Mensa's career

July 31, 2017

Fresh off the release of his highly anticipated debut studio album, The Autobiography, Chicago's Vic Mensa took some time out of his whirlwind promotional tour to chat with our partners at Billboard. Mensa discussed everything from growing up in Chicago with friends like Chance the Rapper, Joey Purp, Towkio, and others, to his parents, his new album, working with JAY-Z, how he keeps his head in a good place, and so much more.

As for the 24-year-old's new album, it is already being celebrated by many. Its release comes on the heels of Mensa scrapping plans for a different album last year. That record, accoring to Mensa himself, likely would have been focused on activism. The Autobiography, however, is far more internally focused than outwardly focused, with tracks like "Rollin' Like a Stoner" and "Heaven on Earth."
