Hip Hop Album Sales: The Week Ending 7/7/2013

J. Cole gets his #1 with "Born Sinner," and beats Kanye West's "Yeezus" in overall units sold. Jay-Z brings an album to the charts, but it isn't "Magna Carta Holy Grail," and Starlito moves units.

Although it took three weeks at retail, J. Cole officially has a #1 album in Born Sinner. The Fayettesville, North Carolina emcee/producer's sophomore album matches this feat accomplished immediately with his 2011 debut. Additionally, Cole has out-sold Kanye West's Yeezus, according to the charts. Both albums, along with Mac Miller's Watching Movies With The Sound Off, were released on June 18.

Both J. Cole and Wale are managed by Roc Nation (where Cole is also signed). Cole's surge bumped Wale's The Gifted to #2. This week, the pair appeared on their latest collaboration, "Winter Schemes," a new track produced by Seattle, Washington producer Jake One.

Nashville, Tennessee rapper Starlito also made his charts debut this week. The digital album, Cold Turkey nearly cracked the Top 100 for the longtime Young Buck affiliate and collaborator.

Lastly, while Jay-Z's Samsung device-released Magna Carta Holy Grail did not appear on the charts this week due to Nielsen's tracking methods, Jay-Z's The Black Album, released a decade ago this November, returned to the Top 200 in a week when the Roc-A-Fella Records co-founder's name dominated media cycles.

Starlito Hits The Charts Cold Turkey

The artist formerly known as All Star Cashville Prince made his solo Top 200 debut this week with Cold Turkey. The regular Don Trip collaborator joins Kidd Kidd, Curren$y and Gillie Da Kid as another former Cash Money/Young Money Records artist to find success after failing to release a project on the veteran label.

Cold Turkey sold nearly 4,000 units digitally, from the Grind Hard Entertainment label. Guests include Freddie Gibbs and Devin The Dude (who appear on the song, "Rollin'"), as well as Alley Boy and Kevin Gates.

Jay-Z Albums Stay In The Black

While Magna Carta Holy Grail will be an addition to the charts in the weeks ahead, Jay-Z's biggest musical week in two years increased his catalog sales. While recent albums like Watch The Throne and Blueprint III did not reach the charts this week, fans of the Brooklyn, New York icon pushed his eighth solo album back onto the Top 200.

The November 2003 effort was the final album Jay-Z and Dame Dash made together at Roc-A-Fella Records. That partnership, which dates back to the mid-1990s, was discussed this week in Jay's Hot 97 interview, where the mogul stated that he "had love" for his onetime business partner and manager.

The Black Album was also the first time Jay and producer Rick Rubin worked together, on the album's third single, "99 Problems," which sampled Ice-T, Mountain and Billy Squier, among others. Other producers on the triple-platinum project included Kanye West, 9th Wonder and DJ Quik.
