Alex Rodriguez could face lifetime ban

CBS Evening News’ Jim Axelrod reports Alex Rodriguez could be dealt a lifetime ban for using performance-enhancing drugs, citing Major League Baseball sources.

From CBS New York:

“My understanding is he’s trying to make a deal,” a source told the website. “But I don’t think it’s going to happen (Monday).”

Rodriguez is the biggest remaining name linked to MLB’s Biogenesis investigation following Monday’s suspension of Ryan Braun. The evidence against Rodriguez is ”far beyond” what the league had against Braun, according to ESPN.com.

CBS Sports’ Jon Heyman reported Monday Major League Baseball is expected to suspend Rodriguez at least 50 games within two to three weeks.

Rodriguez admitted to using steroids before MLB’s penalties were in place, but has never been suspended. He is, however, expected to face a suspension longer than the 50 games first-time offenders must serve for violating MLB’s substance abuse policy.

Heyman reports Rodriguez declined to answer questions MLB investigators had when they interviewed Rodriguez about his connection to the Biogenesis clinic. If the league can prove Rodriguez was using performance-enhancing drugs before or after their interviews with Rodriguez, he could be facing a 150-game suspension. That’s the length reported by the New York Daily News that has been denied by Rodriguez’s representatives.
